Gastronomy Notes

This serves as the start of my food archive.  I am a huge foodie at heart with my main experiences coming from SE Asia and Asian cuisine.  I discovered that I have quite the discerning tongue for various tastes and while I can decipher most Asian recipes to about 90% of the components, I have yet to explore and develop my skills in other genres.  I used to enjoy eating out quite a bit, but given my most recent health scare in 2012, I tend to now gravitate towards cooking as well as a focus on healthier food options.  I even went pescatarian and ate only fish and vegetables for Lent in 2012.  So it’s safe to say that I’m definitely more into the fruits, the vegetables, and the organics.  However, it doesn’t stop me from trying out a new restaurant here and there, especially if I’m travelling!

According to Wikipedia, a “gastronome” is a an individual who is “well versed in gastronomy”.  While I can’t say that I’m an expert by any means, I do claim to have a fairly distinguishing palate and I tend to describe things fairly well.  Gastronomy, by definition (again according to Wikipedia) is “the study of food and culture”.  Truthfully, you cannot have one without the other.  Humans need food to survive, and food has developed throughout time in various cultures.  Now with the whole concept of “fusion foods”, there are blurred lines and blending of two very different cultures.  Yet food seems to bind everything all together because it is enjoyed by individuals from not just one culture but many.

Food has always been a huge part of my own culture.  For many Asians, food symbolizes community.  It is rare for us to eat alone, and we will attempt to try and grab at least one other person to eat with us.  It doesn’t go to say that we can’t eat alone, but the whole concept of a meal is to bring people together, to savor the dishes, and to enjoy contentment not alone, but shared with those around us.  It is with this in mind that I hope to share my culinary and food travels with you through this blog among other things.  While this does not serve mainly as a food blog as food is such a huge influence in my life, it would be unfair to simply blow off the other various things that also compose a lot of who I am today.  However, this portion in and of itself is the start of my food journeys.  Here you can read on the various restaurants that I have been to as well as my personal steps in the kitchen.  I hope you enjoy this site, and thank you for your readership!
